Julie's Journey into Couples Therapy:

Julie shares her motivation for entering couples therapy, rooted in her desire to be a better parent. Growing up in a home with emotional challenges, she aimed to create a happy family to heal her own wounds. Initially overwhelmed as a parent, Julie read parenting books but found contradictory information. Decided to return to grad school to understand psychology and inadvertently discovered attachment theory. Despite initial reluctance, Julie fell in love with couples therapy, finding it intellectually stimulating and emotionally fulfilling.

Attachment Theory and Styles:

Julie discusses the four attachment styles: anxious, avoidant, disorganized, and secure. Anxious attachment individuals seek emotional predictability due to inconsistent responses in childhood. Avoidant attachment individuals, from emotionally impoverished environments, suppress emotions and struggle with emotional intimacy. Disorganized attachment is a blend of anxious, avoidant, trauma, and unpredictability. Secure attachment is the ideal, balancing head and heart, enabling emotional fulfillment and healthy relationship dynamics.

Passion for Couples Therapy:

Julie emphasizes the authenticity in close relationships, allowing therapists to connect with clients at a deep level. Couples therapy provides an opportunity to build a strong alliance and transfer emotional support skills to partners. The intellectual stimulation and emotional engagement in couples therapy make it fulfilling work for Julie.
